Bicycle-friendly cities (local government units), workplaces, and establishments can be awarded with Katipunan, Gold, Silver and Bronze ranks, determined by a panel of distinguished guests and experts from ICSC, MNL Moves, Climate Reality Project, 350.Org Pilipinas, and Pinay Bike Commuter.
Criteria
All nominations will be evaluated and ranked according to the 5 I’s that are consistent in making great places for bicycling.
- Infrastructure – level of presence of physical infrastructure or end-of-trip facilities dedicated to bicycle users (i.e. bike racks, storage areas, free tap refill water stations, changing rooms, showers).
- Integration – level and variety of programs, policies, and plans that enable cycling, promote safety, and support the well-being of active mobility commuters such as education initiatives that aim to increase public awareness of car drivers to respect bicyclists and pedestrians
- Implementation – of programs and policies that maintain the safety and well-being of cyclists.
- Innovation – weighs in creative solutions and approaches that promote active cycling and walking and utilizes cycling and walking as an enabler for addressing other urban development challenges. This criteria takes into consideration how solutions are designed and adapted based on current capacities (ie: culture, age, size, location, type of industry). This enables us to determine the level of commitment of LGUs/businesses despite existing limitations.
- Inclusivity – measures the extent of how accessible and welcoming the bike-friendly infrastructure and programs are to a diverse group of populations such as inexperienced cyclists, PWDs, children, women, and the elderly.
Ranking System
The awards are annual and will monitor ways in which previous winners have improved or regressed or remained stagnant. This means ranks can increase in level and can also be reduced annually depending on the improvement or decline of bicycle-friendly ardor, initiatives and facilities among government offices, workplaces, and establishments. Nominees will be accordingly ranked every year under the following rank classifications: Katipunan, Gold, Silver, and Bronze.
The Katipunan award is the highest rank attainable in the Mobility Awards. It signifies truly transformational efforts initiated and/or adopted by a city, workplace or business establishment in providing and encouraging their constituencies, employees, or customers to adopt and/or maintain bicycle commuting as a mainstream mode of transport, and in making cities pedestrian-friendly. The Katipunan award is inspired by the revolutionary ideals of Katipuneros in uniting Filipinos, securing genuine freedom, and advancing social justice. The Katipunan award emulates these same goals but in the context of gaining independence from fossil fuels and promoting the mobility needs of the majority of our people. It seeks to unite Filipinos behind the ideal that asks our government to prioritize moving people, not cars, and by pointing to public transportation as an effective, pragmatic indicator of democracy in the country.
Katipunan awardees will receive an artist-designed trophy that symbolizes leadership, excellence, and strong commitment in enabling bicycle-friendly communities. The Katipunan category is the most difficult achievement. It can be won two ways: reaching a perfect score grade or if a business, workplace or LGU entity wins three consecutive Gold awards. The Katipunan award can also be withdrawn if winners fail to maintain levels of support for active mobility responsible for their previous wins.
